Educational Philosophy
Education is the core of all of life’s endeavors. The world in which we live is built on the experience of those that have lived before us. Education is learning about the experience of others, determining if those experiences still fit the current situation, and analyzing other alternatives. Education serves two very distinct purposes that can be used autonomously or simultaneously. First, education fulfills the human nature of curiosity. Individuals having their own questions and seek answers for their own personal benefit. Second, education can be used to actually help change the circumstances in which we live. I believe with education individuals have the opportunity to change their lives.
Subject matter is not the key to education. What an individual chooses to do with the subject matter is the key. I provide information to the learners and then engaging learners in analyzing the information. I also serve as a guide in helping learners in reaching course objectives. Students work in groups, use problem solving techniques and share their previous experiences (education). For example after being provided with background information students may interpret quotes by Enlightenment Thinkers and determine possible impacts on European governments. Learners are also provided with scenarios and are asked to solve the problem within the content of the information provided. The learners become knowledgeable, develop critical thinking and have a personal stake in their own learning. Learners are symbols of life. If individuals choose to embrace life’s opportunities they will have a multitude of experiences; and if they choose to limit their opportunities their experiences too will be limited. Learners must come to education with an open mind and be willing to open themselves to the benefits of education.
