I. Course Description
Civics is the study of the rights and duties of citizens. The course examines the roots of our government and place as citizens in it. We will also be examining other legal and political systems. Economics will be taught the second part of the semester and will involve studying the foundations of economics and the place it has in our lives.
II. Course Standards:
1. Proud to be an American: Students will evaluate & understand how people identify themselves as Americans
2. Lego’s of American Government: Students evaluate & assess how the founding documents reflect continuity & change.
3. We the People: Students will analyze how the structure of the U.S. & N.C. Constitutions balance the power of government with the will of the people
4. Three Ring Circus: Students will understand how power is shared between people & government & how that struggle impacts the lives of Americans.
5. Ante Up: Students will hypothesize & deduce how ideologies influence our decisions.
6. Law & Order: Students will understand why it is important for our legal system to be based on the Rule of Law.
7. Decisions, Decisions: Students will make connections between scarcity & making economic decisions
8. Money Makes the World Go ‘Round: Students will understand how scarcity creates an interdependent global economy.
9. Who Wants to be a Millionaire: Students will comprehend how individual choices are made because of scarce resources.

~5 Subject College Ruled Notebook ~Pens/Pencils, Eraser ~Glue Stick
IV. Expectations
1. Bring all necessary materials to class every day.
2. Demonstrate a positive attitude, consistent work ethic & participate
3. Be respectful to the teacher & classmates
Being Respectful means:
o Speaking to and treating others with kindness
o Waiting your turn to speak
o Being quiet when the teacher is talking
o Showing courtesy to visitors
o Sitting up in your seat and paying attention to the lesson
o Staying away from the teacher’s and classmates’ possessions
o Avoiding food and drink in the classroom
o Waiting to be dismissed at the end of class
4. Get to class on time.
5. The understanding that you are responsible for your success & failure. When you have questions or concerns, ask…do not let your concerns fester all semester long.
6. You may not have makeup, lotion, perfume, pictures, mirrors, ipods, cell phones etc. out during class. If you have these items out during class they will be confiscated.
7. Technology (cell phones, lab tops, iPads, Kindles, etc.) may only be used at the teacher’s digression. Technology used outside of approved times will be confiscated and turned into the office.
V. Make-Up Work
If you are absent from my class for any reason it is your responsibility to get all missed assignments. I will not seek you out to give you your assignments. You may receive work in 2 ways. First, come to me before school or after school NEVER during class. Second, check your folder, I will put any handouts in your folder get them when you return to class. If you have any questions see me before or after class. The make-up policy for this class follows the school policy. If you are absent, you have five (5) days from your date of return to complete your make-up assignments.
VI. Extra Help & Parent Contact
Please feel free to talk to me or email me if you need help or do not understand an assignment. I will be willing to make arrangements to meet with you. Please ask at any point if you need help. Also, I will be in contact with your parents throughout the year to report any problems such as grade shifts, missed classes, behavioral issues or assignments. I am will available for tutoring on Mondays after school. You must inform me that you plan to be at tutoring. Tutoring will end promptly at 3:15 & transportation will not be provided
VII. Grades
A model of how your grade would be determined would look somewhat like this in a breakdown each quarter. Late assignments will be accepted with a 50 point grade penalty, so it is crucial that you turn work in on time. Students you have 5 schools days to take missed exams or quizzes otherwise you will receive a 0 for said assignment.

Daily Quizzes/Classwork/Homework 30%
VIII. Notebook:
All students are required to keep a five-subject, college rule notebook with a plastic cover. Students must have this notebook with them each day in class and will hand it in at the end of the year. This notebook is essential to the student’s success in class. Each student will be responsible for maintaining their notebook and keeping it in order for notebook checks and quizzes.

I have set up a way to communicate with my students via their phones. I can text the students upcoming due dates, quizzes, and other classroom notifications. I have set one up for each class. Parents are welcome to join as well.
